27/01: Ironing/ Steam
Ironing/ Steam
I can’t stress enough how important an iron is, this can make or break a sewing job, it doesn’t matter if you are making clothes, cushion covers or altering, an iron is a must.
You need a good iron, one that has a variety of heat settings and a smooth sole plate, make sure you keep your iron clean and always use a press cloth white or off white cotton is ideal.
A wide ironing board is a good idea, with a non reflective covers are best, silver are too slippery
The ironing board is best if it’s well padded, this helps to stop the seam from showing on the outside.
When you use fusible interfacing make sure you use a pressing cloth or kitchen paper this helps
To stop the soleplate from gumming up when the glue melts on the interfacing.
Also get a sleeve board this is a mini ironing board there great for sleeves and inside trouser legs. Another alternative is to roll up a towel, it gets the job done.
On the DVD I’ll show you a couple of neat tricks with an iron, I’m sure you‘ll love it.

Wow what an amazing week for Clothing alterations, The Queen of England was in Blackpool for the Royal Variety Performance 2009, Peter Kay hosts the 81st event from the Opera House Theatre in Blackpool, where a roster of stars perform, Topping the bill are Bette Midler, Whoopi Golderg, Michael Buble and Alexandra Burke. This is the first time since 1955 that the Royal Variety was staged in Blackpool and for that reason The week before we got swamped with clothes to alter, knowing that we would be very busy on that week me and the girls made sure that we were ready, good job to, we were run off our feet. Most of the alterations were shortening of Trousers, Dresses and Jacket Sleeves, two hours before they still wanted their clothes altered tons of pressure, but the girls know that is the name of the game. Blackpool is a holiday town in fact it's the biggest in Britain in the summer months some 10/12M people come to stay and see the shows and go to the fabulous nightclubs, even in the winter some of the theatres have shows on such as Comedians, Singers and plays sometimes top line entertainers which is great for my Clothing Alterations shop. 20/11: Price Dilemma
Dilemma.
Here is an interesting Problem that you may be able to help me with, The price of Clothing Alterations and the price of clothes.
Lets suppose that you buy expensive Trousers and the next person buys cheap or discounted trousers when they both need them shortening it would be fair to say that
the price for both are the same, Discount or expensive the work on them is the same.
Now here in the dilemma some times the price of altering the trouser can be more than the price of the trousers.
The customer in some cases tells me the problem, I have a lot of sympathy for their dilemma but what can I do give them discount well it's a bit of a problem if the person who bought the expensive trouser finds out, the only thing I can say to them is look the work and time is the same, my over heads aren't discounted,
to me no matter what I have to pay my bills or go out of business. The customer has two choices pay me to do the job or do it them self's, most can so they pay me, if however they could learn to alter them for them self's and family it would save them and family a small fortune.
I'm open to suggestion and comments or if you need help or advice about Clothing Alterations please feel free to ask.

When I was a teenager I learned to sew in home economics class in school. At that time (I am dating myself!) all girls had to take home economics, so we all learned to sew, to varying degrees. Now, most people don't learn to sew in school; that's why sewing DVDs are so useful.
If you know how to sew you can make your own clothes and do clothing alterations. With the availability of inexpensive clothes and the cost of fabric, you may not save a lot of money by sewing trousers, for example. The big advantage to sewing your own clothes is that you can let your creativity go wild, creating your own styles and fabric combinations. A learn-to-sew DVD can teach you how to make clothing that fits great and shows your individuality.
Where learning to sew will save you money is on alterations. If you have taken anything to a tailor or dressmaker lately, you know how expensive it is even to get a pair of trousers hemmed or take in a waistband. Knowing how to alter comes in really handy when you have growing children. With a clothing alternations DVD you can learn the skills to do the alterations yourself.
Who knows, maybe you will start you own alterations business. The other thing about sewing is that it is fun. It's great fun to wander through a fabric store, feeling all the textures, planning your next outfit. Laying out fabric on a pattern and cutting the fabric is very satisfying. There's nothing quite like the sound of the sewing machine as it stitches through the fabric. And nothing is more gratifying than proudly modeling your creations and saying, "I made this!" Ever heard of a sewing bee or a sewing circle? That's where folks, women mainly, got together and worked on a communal project or on their own projects. Sewing can be a very social pastime-a great way to spend time with friends. In fact, you and your friends can watch a sewing tutorial DVD and learn to sew together. These days there is a booming interest in learning to sew. A sewing DVD will teach you how to use a sewing machine and other tools of the trade.
You'll learn the right way to use a tape measure and how to rip out stitches with a seam ripper (everyone makes mistakes!). A sewing DVD will show you the different types of needles and kinds of thread, and which to use when. If you have kids knowing how to sew really comes in handy. First, you can easily make costumes and special outfits to your little ones' specifications. And, sewing is a great rainy day activity.
You can teach your children the basics of hand sewing. They can make pillows and other simple crafts. Sewing is definitely not an outdated skill. It's fun, creative, and practical. And it is so easy to learn. All you need to start is a sewing DVD; before you know it, you'll be having a ball and showing off your creations.
